ODeL Campus discuss online education with Tsinghua University

Under the blended mode of learning, students will be using technology to access learning materials from both Kenyan and Chinese professors. Members of the academia will be using video to deliver lectures to their learners wherever they are. Under this model, ODEL students from across Africa and indeed across the globe will be able to get access to education as the brick and mortar model of teaching will be overcome with technology.

Speaking during the meeting, Prof. Peter Ngau, Principal, College of Architecture and Engineering, CAE, noted that the University of Nairobi has a long standing relationship with the Chinese people beginning with the introduction of the Confucius Institute some 10 years back.  Prof. Ngau noted that another team from Tsinghua University are working on the development of the smart city technologies. This is the concept which test the preparedness of a city towards disaster – testing of the security apparatus, fire systems among others. Prof. Ngau was speaking on behalf of the University of Nairobi Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi.

Prof. Shijie Yu, Director, Online Education Office, Tsinghua University and Deputy Director, Ministry of Education Research Center for Online Education stressed the importance of online education in the teaching of students. He observed that students who are looking forward to exchange programs should take advantage of the online education as it will go a long way in helping them in their academic pursuits. He also noted that as a country, they are working on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with specific focus on education goals to help students get experiential learning by adopting blended learning techniques. He took the opportunity to invite University of Nairobi staff members to the upcoming online education conference that is scheduled in China in February, 2019.

ODeL Director, Prof. Christopher Gakuu, said that plans are underway to have staff exchange programs and collaboration where staff members will undergo advanced training on online technologies. University of Nairobi staff will henceforth develop courseware that can be used in the whole African continent. The ODEL Campus is also working on developing a multimedia system, with inbuilt video streaming services, where both Chinese Professors and Kenyan professors can teach students with ease.
