Prof. Peter Amollo Odhiambo is celebrating 50 years of practice as a medical doctor.

Popularly referred to as ‘Kenya’s first heart surgeon,’ Prof. Odhiambo has served the University for 43 years! He is a former Dean, School of Medicine.

At the celebrations held in Taifa Hall, every speaker who took to the microphone had something momentous to say about Prof. Odhiambo. He was described as a man who has given distinguished service to the world.
Memories from the early days of learning and teaching medicine were shared. There was something new to learn for everyone in attendance as a carefully selected panel of eminent scholars shared their views on various topics.
The panelists included Prof. Raphael Munavu, Chairman, Kenya Academy of Sciences, who spoke on scholarship and professionalism, Prof. Gideon Okelo, Secretary, African Academy of Sciences who shared highlights of clinical medicine, Prof. Shem Wandiga, Chancellor, Egerton University and Kenya’s Representative at UNESCO who gave the keynote address on climate change.
Speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, ag. Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic Affairs, Prof. Julius Ogeng’o congratulated Prof. Odhiambo for outstanding professional career.
“For the past forty-three years, since January, 1976, you have served this country through this University. We celebrate your commitment and faithfulness to the profession and University. Your contribution outside the University gave us mileage and contributed immensely to our competitiveness in the region,” said Prof. Ogeng’o. “Your stints in Kenya Cardiac Society, Pan-African Society of Cardiology, Tobacco Control Board, editing and publishing of a medical journal and more, contributed positively to our image. It was your generation that gave Kenya the unshakeable foundations of specialization in medicine!”
