Prof. Nicholas Abinya UoN Scholar Writes Book on Cancer Treatment.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi and the book author Prof. Nicholas Abinya at the book launch ceremony.

The book titled Drug Management of Haematologic Neoplasms,  gives background information on cancer treatment, how the cancer cells behave and the medicines used in cancer treatment.

“The book highlights immune check pointing and reviews current cancer treatment methods,” said Prof. Abinya. “Most lethal types of cancers have been covered in the book and their treatment methods. This book takes pride in using locally generated data.”

While officially launching the new title, the UoN Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi, congratulated the author on his achievement. He noted that the Cancer Bill (2011) is now operational, and that the country through the National Cancer Institute is starting to roll out programs for cancer treatment and control strategies.

“Therefore, this book should go a long way in empowering physicians and students in low-income countries to look at neoplasms of the haematopoietic and lymphoreticular system more critically, and improve cure rates for their patients at minimal toxicity and costs,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor revealed that a fellowship programme to train cancer chemotherapists has been started at the University of Nairobi, and that the curricula for training of radiation oncologists and gynaecology oncologists are nearing completion.

Prof. Isaac Kibwage, the Principal, CHS, congratulated Prof. Abinya for joining the long tradition of established authors from the college. He called on dons to disseminate research findings by  publishing more titles.
