VICE - CHANCELLOR'S REPORT FOR YEAR ENDED JUNE 30, 2011

It gives me much pleasure in presenting the Annual Report and Accounts of the University of Nairobi for the year ended June 30, 2010. During the year under review the University realized a surplus of KShs. 120,005,106 (2009/2010 KShs. 208,721,546).

The cumulative Surplus for the University as at June 30,2011 was KShs 33,813,647 (2009/2010 a deficit of KShs. 86,191,459). The financial performance in the current year was mainly impacted by expansion of academic programmes, refurbishment of teaching facilities, increase of personal emoluments based on improved terms and conditions of service.

During the same period the University got re-certification of ISO 9001 :2008 Quality Management Systems which will run for the next three years. As in the previous years the additional expenditure was not matched by Government funding. The total personal emolument was KShs 6.21 billion while the funding was KShs 4.59 billion giving rise to a shortfall of KShs 1.62 billion.

Despite these challenges, the University continued with prudent financial management of the available resources. The University enhanced income-generating activities through its various campuses as well as the subsidiary company, the University of Nairobi Enterprises and Services Limited (UNES).

The research partners supported the University to the tune of KShs. 1,649,546,226 during the year 2010/2011 (2009/2010 KShs. 1,444,905,433). This went a long way in pursuit of the University mission of teaching and research. The students total population in this period for both undergraduate and postgraduate stood at 58,455.

On behalf of the University of Nairobi, I wish to take this opportunity to thank the Government for releasing the final installment of the 2008-2010 CBA committment and our Donors for their continued financial support especially in research.

Finally, I would like to express my special thanks to the University community who worked tirelessly to ensure smooth operation of th is institution, especially continued commitment of the University performance in accordance with the ISO 9001: 2008 standard on Quality Management System.
