It gives me much pleasure in presenting the Annual Report and Accounts of the University of Nairobi for the year
ended June 30, 2010.     :;
During the year under review the University realized a surplus of KShs. 208,721,546 (200812009 KShs. 293,330,097).
The cumulative deficit for the University as at June 30,2010 was KShs 86,191,459 (2008/2009 KShs. 294,913,005).
The financial performance in the current year was mainly impacted by expansion of academic programmes,
refurbishment of teaching facilities, increase of personal emoluments arising from the industrial court award and the
conclusion of the respective Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs). Other operating costs increased during the
year especially electricity cost which escalated by KShs 115 million.
As in the previous years the additional expenditure was not matched by Government funding. The total personal
emolument was KShs 5.2 billion while the funding was KShs 4 billion with a shortfall of KShs1.2 billion. Despite
these challenges, the University continued with prudent financial management of the available resources. The
University initiated new income-generating activities through its various campus colleges as well as the subsidiary
company, the University of Nairobi Enterprises and Services Limited (UNES).
The University Research Partners supported the University to the tune of KShs. 1,444,905,433 during the year
2009/20 I 0 (2008/2009 KShs.868,343,317). The University continued with its core business of teaching and research.
The students' total population in this period for both undergraduate and postgraduate was 48,616.
On behalf of the University of Nairobi, I wish to take this opportunity to thank the government and our donors for
financial and other support.
Finally, I would like to express my special thanks to the University community who worked tirelessly to ensure
smooth operation of this institution, especially continued commitment of the University performance in accordance
with ISO 9001: 2008 Quality Management System.
