Alibaba Group Executive Chairman and Founder, Jack Ma has challenged University of Nairobi students to embrace electronic commerce as they seize opportunities during tough times, make their clients happy and achieve great success. Ma was speaking at the Chandaria Auditorium, Main Campus on July, 20, 2017.

Founded in 1999, Alibaba Group has grown in leaps and bounds and is now a major player in the global trade competing tech multinationals like Google, Microsoft, Apple, Facebook, Amazon among others.

The cards will serve the purposes of security, identification and as an ATM card, which will enable students’ access the various services simply by swiping.

The idea is being proposed by Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) and has been successfully implemented by other universities among them: Maasai Mara University, Pwani University, Egerton and Moi University. Higher Education Loans Board has been at the forefront in funding students to enable as many students as possible to afford higher education in the university and technical colleges.

The University of Nairobi (UoN) has received Kshs. 4.2 million from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) for an intellectual property audit.

This is the first intellectual property audit to be done by a university in Africa.

Chinese business magnate, Jack Ma is scheduled to give a public lecture at the University of Nairobi on July 20, 2017.

Jack Ma is the founder and executive chairman of the Chinese e-commerce Alibaba Group, a family of internet-based businesses.

Ma will be in Kenya on two-day visit to Kenya, to share entrepreneurial insights with the country's young people.

Elections in Kenya have become a high stakes affair, it is a do or die hence the credibility and preparedness of the electoral commission have been put to test. The commission has been dealing with issues regarding cleaning of the voters register to ensure integrity of the process. American leading audit firm, KMPG had carried out the audit of the voters register and found that close to one million Kenyans who have since passed on are still on the register hence the need for clean-up. The credibility of IEBC have also been brought into limelight following the complaint by the opposition regarding the ballot printing tender

The Rotary Club of Nairobi have today issued a cheque to support bright and needy students from the University of Nairobi College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Club donated a cheque of Kshs. 175,000.  

Speaking during the event, the University of Nairobi Chancellor, Dr. Vijoo Rattansi expressed her gratitude to the Rotary Club for supporting bright and needy students and giving them a chance to pursue higher education. She encouraged Rotary Club officials to also consider endowment fund, where the money will be invested over a long period of time and it’s only the returns that will be used to support many students.

During the event which was held on June 23, 2017, UoN members of staff and students engaged in sports activities such as volleyball, football, netball and basketball and various teams were awarded trophies.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi noted that the commemorative event was an appropriate recognition of the extraordinary progress made and an important reminder that the most profound challenge that still remains is to end the devastating vice in the society.

“To strengthen the set preventive activities, the University has developed a Student Assistance Program (SAP) and  an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) whose specific activities include sensitization campaigns to create awareness, health  education sessions, training (peer counselors/educators), guidance and counseling, orientation of students, appropriate referrals when specialized service is  necessary and  active participation in ADA prevention activities organized by the ADA sub-units and ADA clubs,” he said. The University of Nairobi has a policy on the prevention of alcohol and drug abuse.

he ceremony which was held on June 12, 2017 was also graced by the Deputy President William Ruto. The Chancellor, Dr. Vijoo Rattansi and the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi led the UoN delegation.
 
The President called on the youth to take advantage of access to education to achieve progress.
“The university will bring economic growth to Nandi Hills town. Let us all strive to expand our economy because no one else will come to develop our country," said the President. “This new university will be opened in two years time.”
 
The Deputy President William Ruto, said that the leaders of the region had insisted that the first course the university college offers should be law to represent the freedom and justice that Koitalel stood for.
 
"We want the university college to produce people who will defend our freedoms and the sovereignty of our nation," he said. The university will also offer business and sports related courses.
 
While thanking the President for the President for appointing UoN to mentor the new university college, the Chancellor, Dr. Rattansi pledged to donate books worth Kshs. 18 Million.

“I have the privilege of working with Prof. Magoha as the Chairman of the Kenya National Examinations Council where he is spearheading reforms,” says Dr. Matiang'i. “Prof. Magoha's outlook of life is different. He asks for output from the institutions he leads. Many people make reference to Prof. Magoha when it comes to transformational leadership. If we all serve our nation diligently, Kenya will have great achievements to boast about.”

University of Nairobi Chancellor, Dr. Vijoo Rattansi, has been honoured by the Italian government for her exemplary role in promoting culture and the Italian language in Kenya. She has been at the forefront in strengthening the ties, between the two countries.

The award , ‘Knight of the order of the star of Italy’ is among the highest honours given to Italian citizens who have displayed exemplary performance in the course of their life and in service of country and mankind. The award was presented to her at the Italian Embassy by H.E Mauro Massoni.

The Ambassador, who was speaking during the 71st Independence Day Celebrations noted that the Italian government and the Kenyan government have warm working relations that went a notch higher as President Uhuru Kenyatta attended the G7 Summit in Italy last month.

Over the years, the Italian government has been considerably friendly to the Kenyan government and supported various efforts by the government to transform the country and the living standards of the people.

UoN was recognized for her inclusiveness and diversity in the workplace. The University as an opportunity employer has recruited persons from all the ethnic groups in Kenya. The University has a policy that caters for employment of persons with disability. This is partly a requirement of the performance contract by the government of Kenya.  The government has put in place measures to ensure that the youth, women and persons living with disabilities are given fair treatment in distribution of tenders and in employment opportunities.
