Chiromo Campus is the Overall Winner during UoN Sports Day

The College of Biological and Physical Sciences, CBPS, popularly known as Chiromo Campus has emerged as the best overall team during this year’s University of Nairobi annual sports day that was held on March 29, 2019.

It was blood, sweat and quarrelling encounter with stronger opponents from bigger colleges. Apparently Chiromo campus is the smallest college and seeing it emerge victorious can only be termed as magical. It was a sweet surprise for College Principal, Prof. Bernard Aduda and his team which comprised of staff and students. Once the overall winner was announced, the team broke into dance, songs and ululations as they celebrated their victory.

Speaking during the event, University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi, observed that sports keeps us fit, healthy and the rigorous exercises that sports entails forces us to be disciplined. “Sports keeps us healthy, disciplined, helps us to handle mistakes and helps us cherish growth opportunities. Sports teaches us aspects of life and how to handle success and losses,” he said.

The Vice Chancellor revealed that the various teams will be facilitated and better organized so that they can be able to compete in local, national and international games. Currently, the University of Nairobi rugby team, Mean Machine, competes in the national league. Prof. Mbithi further revealed that an extra 10M shillings will be awarded to the Sports Department budget which stands at 8M to help the department in better organization and facilitation of the various sports teams.

Prof. Mbithi noted that sports industry is growing and students could consider pursuing a career in sports. The industry has been able to create jobs for thousands of Kenyans and indeed Kenya is known globally for its athletics prowess.  The Vice-Chancellor urged staff to embrace sports as it creates a good work life balance and helps in dealing with work related stress.

Prof. Isaac Mbeche, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Student Affairs, took the opportunity to thank the sponsors who were generous with trophies. The sponsors include: Nation Media Group, Kwese Sports, Tecno Mobile, Magnet Ventures, Switch TV and University of Nairobi Alumni Association among others. He thank the various teams who participated in the event including the staff unions: KUSU and UASU. 

The best overall college was the College of Biological and Physical Sciences, the runners up was the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the second runners up was the College of Health Sciences. Congratulations to all the teams that won in various categories.
