Varsity's Alumni Association donates 2M for Bright and needy students

The University of Nairobi Alumni Association, UONAA has donated two million shillings that will go towards supporting of bright and needy students achieve their academic endevours.


Speaking during the cheque donation ceremony that took place at the Vice-Chancellor’s Boardroom today, October, 18, 2018, Dr. Anne Assey, the UONAA Vice-Chair observed that over a period of 10 years since inception of the Association, they have donated up to 21 million shillings to support the education of bright and needy students.

Dr. Assey further revealed that soon, the association is looking into launching more chapters both locally and abroad targeting University of Nairobi graduates in far areas places like Europe, Australia and the United States of America. Local chapters that will be unveiled soon include Mombasa Chapter and Nursing Chapter.

In order to improve its operations, the Association has been benchmarking with similar associations across the globe and has taken their staff members for further trainings on the management of alumni associations. They have further embraced technology in order to increase the alumni numbers.

University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi, expressed his hope and desire that the Association would warm up to all professionals to come back to the University and support their Alma matter.  Prof. Mbithi revealed that in the developed world, three quarters of the University funding is from their alumni. The funding is enough to support development of new infrastructure, support research and even staff salaries. “You carry the torch of the University. We shall meet soon to set out a strategy that will help us in meeting our targets, “said Prof. Mbithi. The Vice-Chancellor thanked the Association for the good gesture and asked them to protect the image and brand of the University.

Also present during the ceremony was the UONAA CEO Keneth Kimutai Sawe among others.
