University of Nairobi Community celebrates World Environment Day.

The University of Nairobi community comprising of staff and students celebrated the World Environment Day by planting trees and carrying out different social corporate responsibility activities around Wangari Maathai Institute, Upper Kabete. The event took place on June 5, 2019 at the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences.

The event was graced by Kiambu County Governor, Hon. Ferdinard Waititu who lauded the partnership between the University of Nairobi and Kiambu County government and the efforts to increase the forest cover in the county.

Prof. Mutembei, Director, Wangari Maathai Institute opined that the University of Nairobi is keen in promoting tree planting and environmental protection. He pointed out that the University is keen in working with the local community to succeed in their environmental protection agenda and dealing with the challenges of climate change. The audience got a chance to understand the implications of planning many trees and protecting the environment from deforestation and loggers.   He took the opportunity to thank partners who generously donated towards the event; Kenya Association of Manufacturers, Carrefour Supermarket, British American Tobacco (BAT), United Nations among others.

Dr. Paritah Shah, a Lecturer from the Department of Geography narrated a poem dedicated to the Nobel Laurate, the late Prof. Wangari Maathai. She described the late Wangari Maathai as a mentor, a champion of environment. “Unbowed. First woman to earn a PhD in Kenya, Her victory stood firm. It was because of her that Karura Forest and Uhuru Park have been preserved. World’s hero in greening peace. Protector of sustainable future. In her honour we celebrate World Environment Day, “she said.

Among the Corporate Social Responsibility activates that were organized during the day include free medical camp where the general public got access to free health services. Hundreds of people were treated of various ailments and given free medicine. There was also free veterinary care, where domestic animals were taken care of and vaccinated. The afternoon session was punctuated by football activities where various teams competed against each other.
