100 startups to pitch at the Nairobi Innovation Week 2018

As part of the activities scheduled for the Nairobi Innovation Week 2018, 100 startups will pitch their innovative ideas.

From this, the 15 most promising startups will try and win investors, startup enablers and partners to buy into their ideas and secure support.
“During the week-long event, March 9th, 2018 is our startups day,” announced the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi.

Canadian University Students visit The University of Nairobi

Professors from Canadian universities including McGill University, which is one of the top ranking in the world made a one-day visit to University of Nairobi as part of the Canadian Studies in Africa Program (CFSIA).

The visit was part of the traditional one-day annual interaction between the CFSIA group and the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at University of Nairobi. The University of Nairobi was the first place of visit by the CFSIA group in East Africa which usually takes them through Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Zanzibar in a period of close to three months.

University of Nairobi and University of Liverpool sign a Kshs. 68 M deal.

The University of Nairobi (UoN) and the University of Liverpool (UoL) have signed a collaborative agreement which will release an initial Kshs 68 million (£ 485,631) for full time postdoctoral training at UoN as well as setting up of a project office at the School of Public Health.

After Research Capacity Assessment, it is hoped that the project will support multidisciplinary joint curriculum development with UoL, ILRI and other partners. Also in the pipeline is support for applied research at UoN and research placements for graduate students at the School of Public Health and the Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine.

The University of Nairobi has opened its doors to the public for the 8th Open Day. The 3-day event running from February 1st to 3rd, 2018, is being held at the Great Court, Main Campus. All colleges and central administration units have set up camp at the event, meeting and engaging both internal and external stakeholders.

“Open Days are important in demystifying the University,” said Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi. “It provides our prospective students the opportunity to interact with the faculty. We shall continue to intensify our interaction with you so as to give them the opportunity to enrich our curriculum.”

University of Nairobi Maintains Lead Position in Kenya and East Africa.

The University of Nairobi has maintained its lead position in Kenya and East Africa as the best university according to the just released webometrics January 2018 edition.

The University emerged 7 best in Africa and 874 globally out of an average of 12,000 Universities that have been ranked.The University of Capetown, Witwatersrand and Stellenbosch University were ranked position 1, 2 and 3 in Africa.

The prayer service, which was interdenominational, was a clear demonstration of how the University values diversity and inclusivity. The Muslims, Hindus, Seventh Day Adventists, Protestants and Catholics were all represented. Recitations were made, prayers said and songs were sung by various student choirs.

In the reflection, Rev. Hosea Mitei, the Protestant Chaplain, challenged the University community to learn to give thanks when good things happen.

University of Nairobi hands over the First KiboCUBE CubeSat to JAXA

On January 16, 2018, at the JAXA Tsukuba Space Center, a team from the University of Nairobi (UoN) handed over to JAXA the first KiboCUBE CubeSat, 1st Kenyan University Nano Satellite-Precursor Flight (1KUNS-PF).

The CubeSat was developed by UoN.
 
Under the KiboCUBE programme between the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and JAXA, 1KUNS-PF is the first CubeSat selected to be deployed from Kibo, the Japanese Experiment Module of the International Space Station (ISS). Preparation is underway to reach the deployment timeline, sometime this spring.

Kenyan born Senator for South Australia, Lucy Gichuhi,calls on unity among Kenyans.

The Kenyan born Senator for South Australia, Lucy Gichuhi, has called on Kenyans to learn to embrace one another, irrespective of colour, tribe, gender or place of origin.

The Senator delivered a speech titled ‘How to disagree agreeably,’ at the University of Nairobi on January 18, 2018.

She reflected on the life lessons learned while she was growing up. She narrated how different experiences in her childhood molded her into the leader she is today; having interacted with different cultures as she pursued her education in high school and at the University of Nairobi.
