ODEL Campus Launches Degree Programmes on a Mobile App

Thursday 6th June 2019, ODeL campus has today launched twenty two (22) academic programmes that are ready for offer using Open, Distance & e-Learning modes of delivery. The 22 programes comprise of about 560 modules that will be accessible to learners through a robust Learning Management System (LMS) equipped with a mobile application. The launch was held at the Chandaria Auditorium on 6th Floor, University Towers.

Speaking at the Launch, ODeL Campus Director; Prof. Christopher Gakuu shared the vision of the campus to Transform teaching and learning through development and delivery of standardized learning. Towards this Objective, the Campus has collaborated with various stakeholders like Kenya Education Network (KENET), International organizations like Common Wealth and Colleges within the University to develop the programs to meet set global standards and ensure all programs are accessible to learners all over the world. ODeL will use the latest technology and available platforms like Youtube, Blue button technology to deliver Video Conferences and is in the process of Collaborating with CommonWealth to develop course content that will be available through Open Schooling Platforms.

To further demonstrate how the ODEL modes of delivery will work, Dr. Naomi Gikonyo gave a presentation highlighting how each platform will work to meet the campus objective of “Your mobile learning partner, anytime, anywhere. Learners will be able to apply for online courses through the University website (uonbi.ac.ke and odel.uonbi.ac.ke) and will follow the easy steps to register, study as well as participate in group discussions. The learning materials may be accessed on any one or more of the following content delivery methods; Learning Management System, Portable devices, Mobile application Video conferencing and Print media.

 

Also speaking at the event, Prof. Julius Ogeng’o, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs lauded ODeL campus for launching the 22 programmes in tandem with the strategic direction the University of Nairobi has taken in the area of e-Learning and technology hub for the region.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi began his speech by congratulating the ODeL Campus team for the successful development of the 22 programs, saying that this launch is a step toward the future. “I believe firmly that technology will drive the future of the University therefore we must infuse all our academic programs with the available technology to make it accessible to students across the globe” In addition, the Vice Chancellor further stated “the University of Nairobi must offer availability, must be open, must not only be adaptive to change but also create the necessary changes to chart the direction to develop much further”. He concluded his remarks declaring that henceforth the University will fully adapt technology to further experiential teaching.

Also speaking at the event were Prof. Meoli Kashorda of Kenya Education Network (KENET) and Prof. Bitange Ndemo who both highlighted on the need to embrace new technology to enable the University to be more inclusive in Education. The future of education will be more towards
