Envoy Calls for Collaboration between UoN and Ethiopian Universities

The Ethiopian government has made an appeal for enhanced collaboration between Ethiopian universities and the University of Nairobi.

Speaking at the University of Nairobi during the commemoration of the 55th Anniversary of the Ethio-Kenyan diplomatic relations, the ambassador of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, His Excellency Meles Alem, said there is little collaboration between the two nations despite their strong diplomatic relations.

The envoy said Kenya and Ethiopia are home to more than 100 universities yet the level of collaboration between the two nations are a few professors teaching in Ethiopian universities and few Ethiopian students studying in Kenyan universities.

H.E. Alem, who is an alumnus of the University of Nairobi, challenged UoN and Addis Ababa University to lead collaboration initiative, noting that they are oldest and  the top ranked universities in their respective nations. He urged the institutions to initiate exchange programmes in order to foster collaborations between Kenya and Ethiopia.

“Capitalising on our special status, we must work to institute joint degree and exchange programmes. Sooner or later we have to see Ethiopian students in the University of Nairobi and Ethiopian students in the Addis Ababa University. Joint programmes can help to foster the academies of the two countries, contributing to people-to-people relationship. As the ambassador of Ethiopia, my door remains open to assist in any way possible to foster such programmes,” said the envoy.

The envoy hailed the special relationship the two countries enjoy, noting Kenya and Ethiopia have a common destiny and co-exist without rivalry. He urged the University of Nairobi students and the youth countrywide to enhance partnership potential.

In a further demonstration of closer ties between the two nations, Mr Alem said there are no visa restrictions for Kenyans wishing to visit Ethiopia and vice versa.
