Lead with honour, Chancellor Advices Student Leaders

The Chancellor of the University of Nairobi Dr. Vijoo Rattansi and the Council Chair Prof. Julia Ojiambo took a rare opportunity to mentor newly elected UNSA leaders.

While addressing student leaders during a dialogue held on July 18, 2019 at the Chandaria Auditorium, University of Nairobi Chancellor, Dr. Vijoo Rattansi promised to look into the issues raised by student leaders. The Chancellor took the opportunity to congratulate the new UNSA leadership presented a symbolic bouquet of flowers to the President. “You have a heavier burden of responsibility. You must elevate yourself to fight for honour. As the good book says, be motivated by whatever is true, whatever is honest, whatever is lovely and of good report. I urge you to embrace dialogue with the students and the administration. I challenge you to be kind and honest, “she said. The Chancellor urged student leaders to go and serve all students.

Chair of University Council, Prof. Julia Ojiambo, challenged students to grow and offer alternative leadership to the country and the world at large. She promised to look into the living conditions in the halls of residence. “The living conditions are in dire need of improvement, we shall look at them. We shall endevour to improve students and staff welfare. It is a mammoth task that will be done over time, “she said. She asked the student leaders to work together with the University Management and University Council.  Prof. Ojiambo cautioned students to avoid getting distracted by politicians who may be out to gain mileage from student politics. “We run an open door policy, we are here to help you achieve your goals”, she said.

University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Mbeche, asked the student leaders to mentor students living with disabilities. “The way forward is to address the key issues raised and implement the recommendations. Management shall continue to dialogue and listen when you have issues that concern students, “he said.

University of Nairobi student leaders led by UNSA President Ann Mvurya had an opportunity to present issues affecting students to the University Management.

Student leaders raised a number of issues affecting them. They include; sanitation in the halls of residence, equipped laboratories, modern accommodation facilities, repair and maintenance in the halls of residence, security, books in the library especially Mombasa campus, transport, sports facilities, Wi-Fi in the halls, reinstatement of suspended and expelled students.
