he ceremony which was held on June 12, 2017 was also graced by the Deputy President William Ruto. The Chancellor, Dr. Vijoo Rattansi and the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi led the UoN delegation.
 
The President called on the youth to take advantage of access to education to achieve progress.
“The university will bring economic growth to Nandi Hills town. Let us all strive to expand our economy because no one else will come to develop our country," said the President. “This new university will be opened in two years time.”
 
The Deputy President William Ruto, said that the leaders of the region had insisted that the first course the university college offers should be law to represent the freedom and justice that Koitalel stood for.
 
"We want the university college to produce people who will defend our freedoms and the sovereignty of our nation," he said. The university will also offer business and sports related courses.
 
While thanking the President for the President for appointing UoN to mentor the new university college, the Chancellor, Dr. Rattansi pledged to donate books worth Kshs. 18 Million.

Prof. Magoha’s Autobiography Launch

The new title vividly captures the life and times of the former vice-chancellor of the University of Nairobi, Prof. Magoha. In his autobiography, Prof. Magoha has shared how his formative years were, captured his family life, his pursuit for education, his thoughts on transformative leadership, his stint as UoN vice-chancellor and the lessons learnt. Through and through, Prof. Magoha celebrates and acknowledges those who played a critical role in his life. The book is published by East African Educational Publishers (EAEP).
 
At the launch on June 14, 2017, speaker after speaker spoke about Prof. Magoha’s leadership acumen and style.
 
“I have the privilege of working with Prof. Magoha as the Chairman of the Kenya National Examinations Council where he is spearheading reforms,” says Dr. Matiang'i. “Prof. Magoha's outlook of life is different. He asks for output from the institutions he leads. Many people make reference to Prof. Magoha when it comes to transformational leadership. If we all serve our nation diligently, Kenya will have great achievements to boast about.”

UoN Chancellor, Dr. Vijoo Rattansi Awarded by Italian Government.

University of Nairobi Chancellor, Dr. Vijoo Rattansi, has been honoured by the Italian government for her exemplary role in promoting culture and the Italian language in Kenya. She has been at the forefront in strengthening the ties, between the two countries.

The award , ‘Knight of the order of the star of Italy’ is among the highest honours given to Italian citizens who have displayed exemplary performance in the course of their life and in service of country and mankind. The award was presented to her at the Italian Embassy by H.E Mauro Massoni.

The Ambassador, who was speaking during the 71st Independence Day Celebrations noted that the Italian government and the Kenyan government have warm working relations that went a notch higher as President Uhuru Kenyatta attended the G7 Summit in Italy last month.

Over the years, the Italian government has been considerably friendly to the Kenyan government and supported various efforts by the government to transform the country and the living standards of the people.

Employer of the Year Awards - UoN Wins Big

UoN was recognized for her inclusiveness and diversity in the workplace. The University as an opportunity employer has recruited persons from all the ethnic groups in Kenya. The University has a policy that caters for employment of persons with disability. This is partly a requirement of the performance contract by the government of Kenya.  The government has put in place measures to ensure that the youth, women and persons living with disabilities are given fair treatment in distribution of tenders and in employment opportunities.

As far as governance and leadership category is concerned, the University was not left behind as its leadership were recognized for the good work and rewarded.  Other companies that were recognized in this category include Centum Investment and BAT.

Prof. Judi Wakhungu, the Cabinet Secretary for Environment receives a gift from Prof. Madara Ogot, Director of Research.

 “Individuals, businesses and governments need to work together since at the heart of Nexus is understanding of interdependencies“, she said. “The government has set in place various measures to address the challenges of water, food and environment. Key among them is developing and implementing policies on water to control irrigation, encouraging the use of solar and renewable energy such as wind, geothermal and solar, national forest policy to grow and sustain a tree cover of 10%, use of biofuels and biomass to supplement energy usage among others.”
