CAVS and CHSS academic staff undergo pedagogy, andragogy and mentorship training

The Centre for Pedagogy and Andragogy (CEPA) will be conducting a 3 day workshop for the academic members of staff from the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences and College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

 The workshop ran from Wednesday, June 19 to 21, 2019. The workshop covered major topics such as engaging and activating learners during teaching, application of problem-based learning, curriculum alignment, lecturer-student mentorship to enhance teaching in the university, communication skills and experiential learning and integration of ICT.
“The purpose of this training is to build the general pedagogical foundation of all lecturers by equipping them with the necessary skills in didactics, experiential learning and problem solving based learning with an aim to enhance the quality of graduates,” said Prof. Justus Inyega, Director, Centre for Pedagogy and Andragogy. ”CEPA has conducted a series of similar workshops involving lecturers from Colleges such as the College of Architecture and Engineering, College of Health Science and College of Biological and Physical Sciences.”
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi officially closed the workshop stating that the training is part of sustainability of the University of Nairobi Vision of a world Class University committed to scholarly excellence. Prof. Mbithi highlighted some of the major steps the university is taking to ensure all lecturers undergo pedagogy skills training to improve their teaching and delivery of lectures. Every year, thousands of students from the University join the job market, Lecturers must prepare the students to be the best in the very competitive job market.
Also speaking during the opening ceremony were the host principal, Prof. Isaac Jumba who highlighted the achievements of CEPA since inception in 2015; Prof. Jumba urged all participants to apply the knowledge they will gain in the workshop to teach students. Prof. Peter K’Obonyo representing the College Principal CHSS further encouraged participants to actively participate in the workshop to gain new insight in Pedagogy.
